Supporting Greinke E-mail

greink3On September 6th this blog proclaimed Zack Greinke as the CY Young Award winner. It was that easy.

I'm pissed off though and I'll tell you why. I can't tell you how many calls the radio talk shows received here yesterday saying that CC Sabathia got snubbed. And I'm not in NY I'm in Mission, KS!

CC Sabathia are you kidding me? What is it with these narrow-minded Yankee fans, and where do all you guys come from anyway? You have now infiltrated Kansas too? Can't we have any part of the country to ourselves! Gee wiz...

What the heck is the point of playing the games if you just get all the best players, win all the games and have your players win all the awards? It's like no one else on any other team can be recognized for even playing the game! You do need a team to play against you know. Exactly is this supposed to work? Is it supposed to be like the Harlem Globetrotters vs. Washington Generals?

One of the reasons (other than just being shallow) that people thought Sabathia should win was because they didn't realize is that the post season doesn't count. The reason for this is precisely what happened here. There may be more deserving pitchers who are on teams that don't make the playoffs (of no fault of their own). This year, Greinke, Hernandez and Verlander all fell into that category.

Greinke went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA and 242 strikeouts in 229 1/3 innings. His ERA was more than a third of a run better than Hernandez, who finished second, and the AL's best mark since Pedro Martinez in 2000.

Included in his record are three losses and seven no-decisions in games he gave up two or fewer runs. His 4.83 runs of support were the lowest among 37 American League pitchers with 140 or more innings.

The last pitcher to have 242+ strike outs, a 2.16 (or less) ERA and .44 (or less) home runs per 9 innings pitched was Pedro Martinez in 1999. Even more amazing, it has only happened five times in the majors since 1970.

Steve Carlton's 1972 Phillies only won 59 games. I guess he shouldn't have on either. - David Ross

If you haven't voted in our poll on the site yet please do so. We are trying to get a feel for how our readers are looking at the game of MLB so we can write about things they want to hear. The poll question is, "Do you think that MLB should have a salary cap or something similar?" - Please vote.
