The Doctor is in...

Question #1: I see the Mets picked up Mike Pelfrey's option.  I've been following him since college.  Big disappointment so far.  What is your projected line for the big guy this year? - Alan, Wichita, KS

Alan: You can't blame the Mets for picking up Pelfrey's option. In a time where garbage pitchers make upwards of 5 million a year, $500,000 for a young Pelfrey is chump change. Dr. Roto is not a big fan of Pelfrey. My guess is about 10 wins with an ERA around 4.20 and a WHIP of 1.4 or so. The Mets would be better off holding onto him and seeing if they can entice another team to buy into the hype during spring training.

Question #2: Is NL ROY Chris Coghlan worth $9 in an 8 team NL only league? - Kim, Great Neck, NY

Kim: Dr. Roto is going to say yes, by the slimest of margins. An 8 team NL only league means 24 starting OF plus at least 1-3 utility spots (depending on your league rules). I think that Coghlan is in the top 25 of OF for sure. He also can hit .320 for you and score close to 100 runs. What people also may not realize is that he has 15-20 HR potential in his bat as well as 15-20 steal potential too. Remember, it takes time for a rookie to adjust to MLB pitching. Coghlan showed he can play in the league...now he starts making his mark.

Question #3: No one ever talks about Dan Haren ($13)?  I guess if he were on the Yankees.... When someone asked for him at the trade deadline this past year and asked me what I wanted for him I told them Gordon Beckham ($6) and Pablo Sandoval ($7) and he told me I was nuts.  Was I? - Michael, Fontana, CA

Michael: You made a great offer. Haren is a top 5 NL pitcher who had a WHIP of LESS than 1.00 for almost the entire season. Here's the problem...most teams take offense when you ask for trades for their "kids". You know, guys like Beckham, Sandoval, Coghlan, etc. These guys are good, but c'mon, Beckham won't reach his full potential for another 2-3 years. Haren is in the prime of his career right now. Don't doubt yourself, Michael...you were a smart owner.

Question #4: What are your expectations for Ricky Weeks this year? - Alan, Castro Valley, CA

Alan: I expect that Rickie Weeks will be healthy for spring training. I also expect him to be a "sleeper" pick for many teams. I expect that I will call his name at the draft early on when people have money. I expect that people will overpay for the potential that Weeks has showed for years. I expect that I will sit back in my seat after he goes for $5 more than he should and smile. And I expect he will get hurt again like he always does.

Question #5: I've been eyeing Tommy Hanson.  I'm kind of happy that he didn't win ROY because it might help keep his price down. Would you pay more than $15 for him on draft day in a 14 team mixed league? - Mark, Wilmington, DE

Mark: Dr. Roto is a big fan of Tommy Hanson too. I think $15 for him is about right...you might actually catch some value for him at that price.

The Doctor is out...
