Jonathan Sanchez the San Francisco Giants and Dan Uggla E-mail

jsanchezThe SF Giants have made a statement.

The entire world knows that they need offense. I know it, you know it, their competition knows it and they know it too. It looks like they won't have Bengie Molina their clean-up hitter from last year either only compounding the problem.

Despite the pressing need for offense it appears that the Giants refusal to trade Jonathan Sanchez for Dan Uggla says that they think this will be his breakout year. If that's the case and Sanchez pitches like they think he can, the trio of Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Jonathan Sanchez would be arguably the best trio in the National League.

We all know Sanchez has the talent, we saw his no-hitter (would have been a perfect game if it wasn't for Juan Uribe's error.) Sanchez averages just about 10K's per nine innings which is extraordinary for a starter, but it's been the walks that have curtailed his development. Walking 4.7 batters per nine innings is just too high.

Something happened last year after he was send to the bullpen. Sanchez was banished to the bullpen after the Giants just couldn't take walks anymore and then Randy Johnson got hurt. When Johnson got hurt he sat down with Sanchez and told him "now is your time" and had a talk with him about the ‘art" of pitching.'

After that conversation with Randy Johnson, Jonathan pitched July, August and September with a 3.76 ERA and 110k's in 95 2/3 innings lowering his ERA from 5.30 to 4.24 (not an easy thing to do as the year goes on and the innings accumulate.) Those are quality numbers that anyone would take on their staff, but the Giants are expecting more.

This will be Sanchez' third year as a starter and the Giants are counting on him for a break out year. The fact that he's a lefty works well given that the other two horses are righties and that's not something that should go over looks.

If the Florida Marlins or anyone else is going to trade for Jonathan Sanchez, it's going to take a lot more then Dan Uggla to get him.

P.S. - The Giants are confident that he has turned the corner... I would suggest that he might be a nice add to your fantasy team for the upcoming year as a great source of K's with an expectation of a lower WHIP as he walks less batters.- Michael Cruise

Giant's to continue with 3rd Place mentality
written by Genepool, December 22, 2009
The Giants lost a third of their HR totals from last year in Molina, Uribe, Winn, and Garko. This is from an offense that had the 2nd lowest HR totals in the majors. Instead of moving quickly and getting the players he wanted in the offseason, he waited, and now has to either overpay for someone that is useful, or pull from the dregs of the FA pool. I don't see the pitching staff improving from last years numbers, let alone improving enough to cover the loss of 20-30 HRs. Need to move a player in an area of strength to get someone in an area of weakness. Uggla may not be the answer, but there are not a lot of guys out there with 30+ HR power.

I think they should hold onto Sanchez. I think this is his year. (But they do need to get somone offense from somewhere)
Sanchez for Uggla would be a trade that

the Giants would regret for years. Sanchez will go on to pitch productively for at least 10 more years, while Uggla MIGHT hit 20 home runs in San Francisco, MIGHT hit 250, and MIGHT play 2nd base (does anyone really think that Freddy Sanchez will be moved to 3rd base?) Why not Beltre (Seattle) at 3rd, and we wouldn't have to give away Sanchez to get that done.
