The Doctor is in...
Question #1: My draft is not a keeper league and not an auction draft, we just pick by rotation 1-16 then 16-1. I have the first pick, all things being equal do I want to take whoever I think is the best pitcher available or the best hitter available with the first pick? - Anson, Concord, CA
Anson: Any fan of Dr. Roto would know that the Doc has serious love for ALBERT PUJOLS!!!! Take him with the first pick and enjoy...
Question #2: I saw you addressed valuing players using Sabremetrics (SABR). I see a lot or people refer to that when analyzing players, what is that? Could you explain it in laymen's terms? - Vincento (The Alien), Roswell, NM
Vincento: In simple terms, sabremetrics is the analysis of baseball using statistics. In today's computer world, many fantasy guys look at the numbers more than they look at the player. So, for instance if a pitcher shows over a three year period that he is walking fewer guys and picking up more strikeouts, sabremetrics would point to the specific numbers to prove the point of progression. Dr. Roto values sabremetrics, but also values the naked eye as well as intelligence. Intelligence in this case includes specific sources (people like coaches, managers, scouts) that are close to the teams.
Question #3: I see that you like Rick Ankiel as a sleeper? How much would you pay for him in a mixed 5x5 keeper league with 14 teams? Is there anyone else that you would put in his class? - Kerry, Seton Hall University
Kerry: Dr. Roto wants to give a shout out to all the Pirates in South Orange! As for Ankiel...I would hope that you could get him between $3-5 dollars at the end of your draft. More than that would probably not be worth it. I will have more sleepers for you as we get closer to the season. Take a look at www.roto-rx.com as well to see who Dr. Roto recommends.
Question #4: Of the MLB Free Agents that are left, is there anyone that you think will sign and have a Fantasy impact? - Joseph, Cupertino, CA
Joseph: Two guys come to mind: Orlando Hudson and Johnny Damon. O-Dog is a solid hitter who does all the little things for a fantasy team. He makes an excellent pick at the end of the draft in most leagues. As for Damon, Dr. Roto is upset at Scott Boras for giving him bad contract advice. Damon still can hit well enough to be a good player on a fantasy squad. While not the Damon of old, it would not be a shock to see him hit 12 HR and steal 12 bases.
Question #5: Would you bid less on Johnny Damon if he signs with an NL team on the theory that he wouldn't get as many at-bats? - Christopher, Drexel Hill, PA
Christopher: I would bid less on Damon not because he would be in the NL, but because he would not be with the Yankees. I would bid two dollars on YOU if you were playing in a Yankee uniform. As I mentioned above, Damon still has value, but I might bid .60 cents on last year's dollar depending on where he ends up and the lineup hitting behind him.
