The Doctor is in...
Question #1: What are your thoughts on Francisco Liriano? Is he far enough removed from surgery to be dominant this year? - Evan, Clemson University
Evan: Not sure if you saw last week down in the Caribbean, but Liriano threw 5 innings of zero run, 10 strikeout ball. Not sure if that translates to the same dominance in MLB, but it means that he seems to be on his way to returning to form. Invest if the opportunity is there in your league.
Question #2: I keep waiting for a monster year from B.J. Upton but he's either not healthy or it's not happening for some other reason. Am I wasting my time with him again this year? - Gary, Linden, NJ
Gary: Very few people love BJ Upton like Dr. Roto. The good Doctor has always been a fan and thinks that he hasn't scratched the surface of his unlimited potential. Last year, Upton was not healthy for the first month of the season, and then when he came back he put undo pressure on himself when the Rays put him at leadoff. If Upton bats lower in the order this year (a virtual certainty), watch him get comfortable this year. if that happens, the more power/speed you will see.
Question #3: What was your take on the Homer Bailey piece on this site? Is he a bust or should I try to buy on the cheap and stash for 2011. (Or do you think he can actually provide some value this year?) - Sneed, Ohio St. University
Sneed: I am going to let you in on a little secret. Don't tell the rest of the guys in your dorm...this is just for you. "Dusty Baker ruins pitchers." Because I know this info, I avoid any Dusty Baker managed pitcher as much as possible. The ONLY saving grace in Cincy is that GM Walt Jocketty knows what he is doing. I would probably talk up Bailey at the draft table and see if I could get a few extra dollars bid on him. I would only want him if I could get him for a buck or two.
Question #4: With a 31 man roster and 24 actives, do you recommend having a back-up for every offensive spot or not so much for the catcher? - Larry, Fort Collins, CO
Larry: Dr. Roto wants to send some love out to his buddies at CSU...go Rams! As for your question...with my 7 reserve picks, I try to get myself at least 3 pitchers, mostly because pitchers are unpredictable (Ross Ohlendorf was a Dr. Roto reserve round special last year). Then I try to get at least 2 OF. Then I take one corner player. With my last pick, I look for upside...no matter the position. Catchers are not usually in that discussion because after the best 15, they are all pretty average (at best).
Question #5: I notice that you declared Garret Atkins "done" quite a while ago and seemed to have that one pegged. How do you feel about Vernon Wells? - Susan, Brownsville, TX
Susan: Vernon Wells did have an off year FOR HIM last year. However, compared to the average OF his numbers were decent. 15 HR and 17 SB are solid, to be sure. I think that Vernon will enjoy playing under Cito Gaston and have a respectable year in 2010. I would use last year's numbers as a baseline and hope that he can go up another 20%. He's NOT DONE.
