The Doctor is in...

Question #1: I'm in an NL only league and have the 1st pick in a snake draft. I want to take a pitcher. I'm torn between Tim Lincecum and Roy Halladay, who do you recommend? - Lt. Simms, Fort Bragg, NC

Lt. Simms: Because you are a member of our country's military, I am going to give you some of Dr. Roto's psychological training to answer your question. Please read this out loud so it can sink in. And think Jon Lovitz 'Subliminal Man' as you read aloud.

BEGIN HERE If Dr. Roto had the first pick (Albert Pujols) of an NL only league draft (Albert Pujols), it would be easy to consider (Albert Pujols) a good pitcher (Albert Pujols), however, my good friend Dr. Roto (Albert Pujols) has given me better advice (Albert Pujols) which I am going to listen to (Albert Pujols). If I want to win my league (Albert Pujols), I will take (Albert Pujols) the best player in all of baseball (Albert Pujols) and be the envy (Albert Pujols) of all the enlisted men on base. END

Question #2: I just read that the Mets that they plan to use Jose Reyes as their # 3 hitter this year (at least while Beltran is out.) Assuming he's healthy, how does that change his value? (I wonder if that is an indication that he's not going to run much either way?) - David, Cooperstown, NY

David: First of all, don't pay attention to every ESPN story that you hear in February. Lots of times managers say things to grab the attention of other guys on the team. Here Jerry Manuel may be saying to Angel Pagan, "Hey Buddy we need you to start for us and play well this year." This gives Pagan confidence going into the first days of Spring Training. On a bigger note, I think Reyes' days of 60 SB are over. Use 30 as a baseline...if you get 40 or so be pleasantly surprised.

Question #3: What are your projections for Javier Vasquez on the Yankees? - Sal, San Diego St, University

Sal: Javy struggled in his last go around with the Yankees and I think that you might see a slight regression in his numbers this year as he moves back to the AL. I project something like: 15 wins, 4.15 ERA, 1.26 WHIP with about 185 K's. Not bad, but not a stud by any means.

Question #4: What is your view on Brandon McCarthy? Do you think he will finally stay healthy and fulfill long awaited expectations? - Mark, Garland, TX

Mark: It doesn't seem that long ago when Dr. Roto had McCarthy very high on his sleeper list when he was a young curveballer for the White Sox. However, McCarthy has never stayed healthy enough to fulfill his vast potential. The trade to the Rangers didn't help him either as the Ballpark in Arlington is not the greatest spot for McCarthy who is more of a flyball pitcher. Here's the best case scenario for him: there will be about a 4 week period this season when McCarthy gets hot and has about 3-5 good starts before he breaks down again. Keep a close eye on him and try to grab him as soon as he does well and then trade him quickly at the end of the month knowing full well that he can't keep it going for a full season.

Question #5: Please rank AL 2B players Robinson Cano, Ian Kinsler, Aaron Hill and Dustin Pedroia in the order of your fantasy preference. - Kevin, Roswell, GA

Kevin: A healthy Kinsler is number 1 for sure as he has 30-30 ability. I am going to put Pedroia 2nd mainly because he will hit over .300, score tons of runs, and throw in 15-20 SB. Let's put Cano 3rd as he plays in a great hitting ballpark on a monster offensive team. Hill will be 4th on the list as he needs to show us all again that last season was not a fluke. That all being said, Dr. Roto would take any one of these guys on his team in a second!
