The Doctor is in...
Question #1: What are your 2010 projections for Matt LaPorta and where do you see him playing? - Karen, Bakersfield, CA
Karen: Matt LaPorta has been on Dr. Roto's radar screen ever since he was a hitting machine down at the University of Florida. His getting traded to the Indians from the Brewers was supposed to give him the opportunity to get the AB's that he needs to become a star. But the Indians delayed those plans by their recent signing of Russell Branyan. For right now, LaPorta needs to get healthy and work on his defense and most importantly...WAIT for his opportunity. It will come soon and when it does he will pay off big time. So for now, Dr. Roto is going to pencil LaPorta in for 400 AB With 400 AB, he should hit: .270-20-58-52-1. If he can ever see 600 AB add another 10HR and 20 RBI to that projection.
Question #2: Where does Everth Cabrera stand in the food chain of short stops this year? - Maurice, University of California
Maurice: Dr. Roto would put E. Cabrera higher up than most in the SS food chain. Cabrera possesses tremendous speed and has a real chance to steal 50 bases this year while scoring 90 runs. The big flaw is in his power game--as he has no power to speak of. Be careful with Cabrera--if your team has enough power to support him then he is worth picking up as your SS; if you lack power already, he is not going to help you, and in fact, may hurt you.
Question #3: I've been following you for a while and I don't recall you mentioning anything about Matt Wieters. Maybe it's because no one has asked about hm. Someone has offered Jorge Posada for him (about the same $). Should I keep Wieters? - Evan, Brigham Young University
Evan: Dr. Roto gives a big shout out to all his fans at the "Y". Tough call here. Wieters is by far the better player for 2011 and beyond, while Posada may actually put up better numbers in 2010. I would tell you to pass on the deal for one major reason: while their numbers may be close, the trade value for Wieters will be higher all season. You may be able to deal him for much more than Posada if you hold onto him a bit longer.
Question #4: Is Anibal Sanchez worth protecting at $6? - Michael, Chandler, AZ
Michael: Dr. Roto likes Sanchez but thinks that $6 would be overvaluing him a bit at your draft. My guess is that he goes for $2-3 tops. Save the $3 and use that for another guy with upside.
Question #5: Would you trade Carlos Pena ($11) to get Kendry Morales ($13)? - Lawrence, Lee's Summit, MO
Lawrence: That is an interesting offer. Dr. Roto would trade Pena for Kendry simply for the batting average. Their power numbers should be similar (maybe a slight edge to Pena), but the batting average may be as much as a .60 point difference. Pena's .240 average is a killer to almost any fantasy team.
